Retaining Walls: An interesting Element of Landscape Design

Posted on March 30th, 2016 by Prunin Arboriculture & Landscape

Retaining walls are a unique way to improve the look of your home and increase its value at the same time. They can be constructed in varying heights and most construction materials can be used. Pavers, bricks, stone and treated timbers are all possibilities. Overall, it is an affordable way to achieve the look you desire at a cost you can afford, all the while reaping the benefits a retaining wall has to offer.

Retaining Walls

Low Maintenance
Most materials used in the construction of retaining walls require little to no maintenance. If the wall is constructed properly, it can withstand a massive amount of weight. If wood is used, it may have to be resealed every two or three years, but other than that, very little will need to be done to keep it looking nice.

If the wall is built properly, the interlocking of the materials used in its construction will increase its ability to bear weight. When natural materials are used, they are native to the local area and can withstand the weather extremes associated with the climate. This makes them less prone to rotting or breaking down and eliminates the need for repairs or the need to replace sections as the wall ages.

Retaining walls serve several functions. They make your home look nice, help to hold water in landscaped areas and prevent soil erosion. They can also help to create boundaries around landscaping, recreational areas and pathways. Walls can be created in varying degrees of height depending on what their main function is. The height and width is up to your discretion as is the materials and the addition of different colored materials.

Aesthetically Pleasing
Retaining walls can be built with designs incorporated into the facade or they can be left plain. Either way they can improve the look of your home and dramatically increase your home’s resale value. Certain home improvements are seen as investments. Because retaining walls are designed to be long lasting, they are definitely an investment worth looking into.
