Soil compaction occurs when air that is naturally in the soil is slowly displaced. Compaction usually occurs over time and can be the result of machinery use, people walking on moist soil, or any other downward force that occurs frequently.
Plants have difficulty in compacted soil because the mineral grains are pressed together, leaving little space for air and water, which are essential for root growth. Soil compaction can cause the death of grass and other plants.
Besides managing traffic flow across your grass you should have established walkways to and from driveways, streets, pools, and other areas where your family and/or guests may congregate.
You can also reduce compaction with soil aeration.
